Introduction:

Hello! We are Ms. Cho's English Language Learners' (ELL) class at Senator O'Connor College School in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Hello, everyone!  I am an English and English as a Second Language Teacher at Senator O’Connor (OCS).  OCS and Toronto are very cosmopolitan.  My parents were born in China, but I was born in Georgetown, Guyana.   I love traveling and learning about other countries’ traditions and cultures.  But I am always happy to be back in Toronto.   Like many of my students, my parents left China looking for better opportunities for their children.  I believe that with the quality of education that my students will receive at OCS and elsewhere in Canada that these young men and women will be successful wherever they go and whatever they do after they leave OCS.  OCS is just one step in their journey.  We look forward to meeting everyone and enjoying the exchange of ideas in this LC.

Ali

I am a girl from China, my name is Ali and I am 16 years old this year. Now I’m attend school in Canada. I have been in Canada for half year. I have no relative lives with me so I need to do almost everything by myself and protect myself. I like freedom and enjoy my life. I keep being curious to the world and I’m confident to make my thoughts come true as well. I like and I am good at science subjects but I don’t like to regret.

The children’s right means a lot to me. That is really important for a young girl who does not live in her own country to know how to protect herself. The same to me. I think that is necessary for us to know several laws about children’s rights. Also I’m the only children in my family, I’m really important for my family, If I can’t protect my rights, my parents must be heart broken. I think as a child, everything I do cannot break the rules, and I cannot harm others, young being is not the reason for that. At the same time others can’t harm me. Children also need to be brave to protect themselves and not to be afraid of adults.

Ardash

Hello,My name is Ardash Ishac,I am Armenian born and raised in Syria.I have recently turned 18 years old and I have an older sister. It has been two weeks since I came to Canada,I enjoy all types of sports and my favourite is basketball,I used to play it back home (in Syria) and I am the champion of Aleppo for 6 years in chess. I would like to be a doctor in future. :D

Children’s rights is the most important thing in our world, That’s why people made communities and foundations to help those children who in need or lost their parents. In my opinion I think we should respect those rights like giving the children a chance to discuss their opinons with people older than them and respect those opinions. Another important thing that we should do is to secure a happy environment for the kids to make them feel like they’re in their homes.

So we have to respect those children’s rights and make sure we are doing it the right way.

Bismark

Hi, My name is Bismark Segovia and Ecuador is my home country, I was raised by my grandparents until I was twelve and I move to Toronto to live with my mom, I came to Toronto because I wanted to learn another language and to study here and meet new people. It means to have the right to a reasonably happy childhood without fear of abuse or exploitation.

Christine

My name is Christine Zhang. I come from China. I am a seventeen-year-old girl. I came to Canada only half years ago.I am the only child in my home, so sometimes I feel a little lonely and bored. In that case,  I like to make friends, so I have many friends. I love playing guitar in my spare time. I do not like loud place, sometimes I just read books in my room by myself. Actually i don’t like to watch teleplay like other girls. I prefer to watch movies or reality show. My life maxim is “nothing is impossible.”

Children’s rights mean children are guarded. Children’s rights are obligatory and inviolable. Actually children have many rights. Not only adults have rights, children have rights, too. For example: the right to be alive, the right to go to school, the right to have privacy, and so on. Even though there are so many different countries, the rights of children are almost same and cannot be violated. In africa, many children are forced to be the soldiesr. Their personal freedoms have been violated. There are lots of events about encroaching children’s rights like that,as a result  we need to take action to stop that. The government of every country should pay attention to children’s rights.

Diana

Hello, I am Diana Guerrero.I am fourteen years old, I have a younger brother and older sister. I came to canada two years ago, I am a professional skater, I love to dance and do any kind of sport. I am a risk taker and i live life as if were my last day. I like to spend time with my family and hang out with friends.

The children's rights are very important because they are all innocent and dependent, they are not capable to make decisions yet for their own. All the kids need support from their family and society.

Today's world does not respect the children's rights, the kids are being abused, for example they are psychologically abused. Another example of abuse is physical abuse making them to work when they are just a kids, there is also sexual abuse. But we can try make a better world staring for respect these rights and give kids a chance to live better and being alive.

Zoe

My name is Zoe. I’m fifteen years old.I Come from China and I’m study in Toronto now. I’m came to Canada half years ago. My hobby is play badminton, because I like it and I think it will make me feel more relax. My favorite instrument is guitar. I like the feeling of pleasure when pop guitar. My motto is that nothing is impossible as long as you to do it by your heart that everything will be possible.

The right of children to me means freedom and equality. I think children should have their own rights, They are human beings not animals, they have the right to decide what they want, rather than by others to determine their life. The should have a life of freedom and equality. We need care about children’ s opinions and views. I think the right of children for me is very important. So we should respect the right of children.

Silvia

My name is Silvia Zhang. I am 17 years old and I come from China. I am the only child in my family, so I always feel boring when I stay at home. Therefore, I have some hobbies that I want to share. I like cooking by myself because I think it is a great skill wherever you are. However, I still need more practice to be a successful cooker. I also like to play badminton and that is the only sport that I can play well.

In my opinion, the children’s rights are kinds of protection of children. Children have the rights to get what they should get, for example: food, water, warm clothes, health care. If everyone knows about what the children’s rights are, children can get more attention, and be treated well. They can get a better childhood. A wonderful childhood can be a very important teacher during their whole life.

Diego

My name is Diego Carasatorre. I was born on October, two-thousand and one in Malaga, Spain. When I was four years old I moved to a city called Cadiz, which was two hours away from my hometown. I lived there for the last seven years. I moved to Canada with my family in two-thousand thirteen. My parents wanted me and my siblings to learn English, so that we could have better opportunities in the future.

To me, children´s rights mean two things, having a voice, and being able to do almost anything. In many places around the world, children can't have or state their own opinion, they are forced to do what adults want. We are all the same,we are all humans; no child has more rights to go to school than any other child. All children should be treated equally and fairly. Every child should be able to have food, studies, a house, caring parents, and their own opinion in order to have a decent life.

German

Hi, I’m German Barbosa, I’m 16, I was born on Bogota, Colombia, I moved to Canada this year in February, I’m here for learn English and I want to study in University here. I am a person who love sports, especially soccer. In Colombia, I played this sport a lot, all the weekends I play with my friends. I’m a person very respectful and i do not criticize anyone. I consider myself a worthful friend and I love video games, like fifa 16, battlefield 4 and more games. I eat a lot, i love food. And I’m responsible.

The rights change the world, in the French Revolution the rights of human became important for the humanity, making the earth a place more safety. Also provides more opportunities for children’s life. The children’s rights are so important for the humans because this guarantees the good life and good health for every children, making good bright future for the entire human society. It’s important for children to know their rights, due to the children need to protect themselves of all the dangers that exist in this world.

Jasmine

I’m Jasmine Tan, an international student from China, studying at Senator O’ Connor high school.

In China, (students study 12 hours every day resulting in that their minds become inflexible, gradually they only obey what their parents want them to do). If students can’t get the high marks, the parents will lose face. Students study for their parents and nobody asks them what them want. For example, I like music, but my parents require me to get high marks at math. The Children’s Rights said that we could express our thinkings and making decisions . I think it’s important to make the choice by ourselves for our future.

Children’s Rights are important for us, children are easily bully, we need rights to protect oeur, and the Children’s Rights are better to help parents consider our opinion.

Naci

Hi!, My name is Naci. I am a basketball player here at Senator O’Connor College. I am fifteen year old teenager and I’am a grade 10 student.I like playing basketball, video games, I like road trips, food, and I am a car enthusiast. I am overwhelmed to work again with everyone. It is gonna be another fun and experience to work with.

Children Rights for me is the power of children to protect themselves.Power for young people who do not know what is happening, inside or outside the world.

Ricky

My name is Ricky, Zhao. I’m from OCS School. I’m from China, I usually watch TV at home in my spare time. I like listening to music and playing video game. I have black hair and a black glasses.

Children’s right is the most important part of their life until they are 18 years old. Children’s right can make sure children living happy and healthy; make sure they will never get bullied and giving them a good mindset; make sure they grow up with happy and smile.

Vivian

I am Vivian Qu.I am 17 years old and I come from China.I have a brother. He is four years old.I’m very envious  the child who is the only one in a family. Therefore,I have some hobbies that I want to share.I like reading because it is a great way if you are boring.I like eating too.If I am angry,I will choose to  eat food to make me happy. However, I need to lose weight.

The children’s rights are really important.Children need more love from father, mother and society.Children are very weak. They need more attention.

Yunong

My name is Yunong Wu, a girl from China now attend school in Canada.I am highly self-regulative. I am a painter, I learned sketch and gouache for 14 years, now doing artwork by myself. Enjoying the time with sleeping and appreciating others artworks. Take interests in Philosophy, take interest in different cultures, respect the diversity of cultures until it badly effects me. I went to the remote-mountain area countryside in China, witness the lack of children's rights, most of them only took primary school, actually, their teaching resources are limited, students from primary school, middle school are in the same classroom and only couple of the teacher teaches them…reality is cruel. I hope every children in the world have their own rights to choose their education. A plant grows shapeless and twisted without a direct and clear light source, our future---children, might step in a wrong way without education.  That is the reason why we should make every children have their rights to choose their education.

Article 27 on children's rights

I feel happy with my family. We have our own inside jokes which makes our home full of laughter and joy. My parents take care of some basic needs for my two sisters and me - such as providing us food, a home and the most important,  family support. They don't ask for anything but respect, support, and love from me. When I do things right, they recognize it and give me treats I like or want to encourage me to make right decisions. In case one day my parents can't take care of me, I have  my aunt , uncles, and grandparents. They took care of me when I was little so I'm very attached to them as if they were my moms and dads. I really love my family. They are the most important people in my life.

We have also researched companies that use or sell products from abroad. We investigated how those companies inform us as a consumer about the amount of child labour used. We all created PREZIs that communicate our research and teach about big companies around the world that exploit children. Our PREZIS are uploaded below.

Hello. We represent Canada, but we are really international students from all over the world, mostly from China, Syria and South America. All of us are going to Senator O Connor College School, which is a Catholic high school in Toronto. Toronto is the largest city in Canada with population over 3 million.

.It made us so curious to find out about different companies and  we got surprised about the information that we found. It  seems other than what we were expecting, but the research was important for us. We enjoyed learning about children right abuses while we were researching.

From this experience we know that many child labor in the world. Before we didn't know so much about child labor, but through this experience we learned that  some children under the age of 18 must work hard. They can't go to school like us, they just stay in the factory and make clothes for those companies. We think it is not fair for them.

Here is what we think everyone should do to stop child labour:

  • Educate yourself about child labour and exploitation  then share with friends, family and others, and work together to increase your “voting” power.
  • Contact retail stores, importers and manufacturers or read about the origins of their products and let them know you want to buy products that don’t involve child labor.
  • Grow more of your own food. Buy from farmers markets (verify their labor practices first).
  • Support reputable groups that are helping free children from exploitation labor.

One such reputable group is Free the Children founded by a Canadian, Craig Kielburger. He was a student in one of Toronto catholic high schools when he started dreaming about all children having the same rights. His idea picked up, and now it is a huge global movement fighting for children's rights.

We hope that one day all children will have a life of freedom.

Evaluation:

Some things that we valued in this GTP experience was that students were able broaden their horizons regarding children's rights. We liked the videos and prompts that were provided for students to receive direction.

Some things we feel could be improved upon are:

-Larger flexibility in assignment completion due to different curriculum expectations in different countries.

-Limit the assignment options so that schools that give each other feedback are on the same page. This would bring forth more consistency.

-More organization with a Skype date. There was too much miscommunication when trying to organize a Skype meeting. Clear directions i.e. providing emails of facilitating teachers so that there is better communication.

-The level of technology varies for all involved, which makes certain assignment difficult to complete.

-The Wiki organization is lacking in the sense that each component should be better housed in its own folder. Instead, everything is on one huge page.
